RODRIGO SASSI

“Fractal,” 2025

12 plaster and cement modules.
Total dimensions: 11 x 7.5 meters

Conceived as an open system, the installation allows for multiple possibilities for fitting the pieces together, forming compositions of varying scale and arrangement. The title "Fractal" refers to the mathematical idea of continuous repetition – patterns that unfold horizontally and vertically, with infinite potential. Inspired by the modernist murals of artists such as Burle Marx and Athos Bulcão – in which the relief projects outward from the surface and interacts with the architecture – Sassi's modules are attached to the wall with screws, establishing a new relationship between figure and background.

The choice of location carries a critical gesture: by occupying a degraded wall of the former refinery, the work rejects the notion of permanence or reproducibility typical of murals. Here, time acts as a co-author. Humidity, silt, and natural wear and tear will be incorporated into the modules, gradually erasing the distinction between the work and its base. As the months pass, “Fractal” tends to take on the same tones as the wall, blurring the lines between the artificial and the organic, between drawing and the medium.

The work was originally created in 2024 for the Wall Project at the MAM São Paulo, with the name “Rizoma”, and presented horizontally. In its new installation at the Usina de Arte, it explores the verticality of the space, reinforcing its vocation for formal and conceptual multiplicity.
