MARCELO SILVEIRA

“Atrium” 2016

Architecture reproducing the atrium of the Usina de Arte’s Casa Grande (“big house”).
This project was born out of the reality of a house, the “Casa Grande”, which is the main house of Usina Santa Terezinha. As a result, it attracted a lot of curiosity from the people working on the property who wanted to know what the inside of the house looked like. Marcelo’s initial project was to realistically and conceptually open the house to allow visits where he thought of organizing some exhibitions. Since the atrium has several independent entrances and accesses, he thought it was possible to conceive such a visiting space. As the logistics seemed complicated, the artist then imagined an exact recreation of the atrium space, in another area of the mills’ park. As everything takes turns in this atrium of the big house, with the replica, there is a greater amplification and conversation. For example, the openings function as frames for the landscape, as a collection of landscapes, a new space for contemplation. The atrium is a meeting place, and because of its acoustics, it now also allows events to take place.

nararoesler.art/artists/48-marcelo-silveira Marcelo Silveira’s work seems to question pre-established categories by challenging and straining seemingly consolidated definitions of sculpture, installation, popular art, craftsmanship, and collectionism. His production is driven by an interest in materiality. Everything can be an object of work: Wood, leather, paper, metal, plastic, and glass are just some of the elements explored. However, the configuration they assume is also fundamental, which can be created from the formal repertoire common to those objects - glass bottles and glasses, for example, or by recreating familiar and common forms in unexpected material, as Silveira does with wood, for example.
