LILIANE DARDOT
“Cabanos in Água Preta Woods” 2019
An installation consisting of three glass blades with drawings printed in ceramic ink. The drawings show people living in Água Preta, combined with details of the Atlantic Forest vegetation, the ecosystem where the Cabanos lived and hid. The artist discovered evidence of what occurred during the Cabana uprising from 1832 to 1836, during the regency period, when blacks fled and freed poor whites, Indians, and small landowners from the Jacuípe villages, taking refuge in the Bosque Temoratas, on the banks of the dark waters of the Una River, between the coast and the sertão.
The blades were installed in a chosen location in the Botanical Garden of the Usina de Arte, in a position oriented to the east and west of the sun. The gap between the blades allows the visitor to step into the space, experiencing different visualizations of the work in conjunction with the landscape. And at that moment, your image is integrated into the drawings, in the space where the Cabanos appear and disappear.

Liliane Dardot’s work is rooted in drawings. Within this medium, a meditative note-taking practice serves as the foundation for the observation of nature. Other drawings and lithographs highlight her concern with social and ecological issues, whilst site-specific installations amplify the scale of her work, establishing an interactive relationship with public spaces. In her paintings, she highlights the transformation of the pictorial surface caused by the incidence of light, and tackles themes such as the vegetable body and the visualities of threatened ecosystems. Her interest in history and literature also finds a place in her works.
She worked as a drawing teacher at EBA UFMG (1969/77) and lived in Olinda, PE (1978/89), where she actively participated in the Guaianases Print Workshop. Returning to Belo Horizonte, she taught lithography at the Guignard School (1990/97). Dardot lives and works in Belo Horizonte, where her studio is based.
